Our History

Connected Kerb was officially formed in 2017. But the ideas and inspiration that led to this point were born long before then...

The business was founded by five friends – Steve Richardson, Nick Dobie, Richard Clements, Peter Howe and Paul Ayres.

Steve and Nick were key contributors in the delivery of Boris Bikes and the London 2012 Olympic Games Transportation programme as part of the Source London project, the London network for electric vehicles. 

They saw the potential in targeting the residential charging point market and set about developing their ideas alongside Richard, Pete and later, Paul.  Their big moment came in 2018 at the London Civic Innovation Awards where they picked up an award in the electric vehicle category. Connected Kerb appointed their first employees and acquired a new office in Holborn shortly afterwards. 

Today, four years later, the company boasts upwards of 60 employees from across the world - from the UK to South Africa and from Brazil to New Zealand. We currently have charging points at over 300 sites across the country. In November 2021, we announced plans to install 5,000 charging points across the UK in 2022 with contracts for 30,000 and 190,000 set to be deployed by 2030. 

We have a unique approach to deploying Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure as we seek to level up the provision of EV charging across the country, which we believe is essential to meeting net zero. By delivering on-street residential charging to the 60% of people unable to charge their car at home, we believe we can make a real difference to EV uptake.  

As well as reducing charging ‘blackspots’ in rural areas we want to ensure disabled EV users can access long-lasting, reliable EV charging infrastructure. 

Increasing EV provision in lower income areas is also our goal. To this end we have worked with Lambeth Borough Council to install charging points across several council estates where toxic air quality levels are highest. 

We have also undertaken the UK’s first public smart charging trial by installing smart charging points across streets and car parks in Hackney, Shropshire, East Lothian and Glasgow. 

These projects are just the start of our journey. We are working with residential developers, commercial real estate, fleets and local authorities to ensure to ensure that the charging infrastructure is there ahead of the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. 

Making EV charging sustainable, affordable and accessible to all remains our single goal as we make a full transition to electric.
